    Tip: Where to Buy Cheap Magazines
    A few months ago we started looking more closely at our budget. Being online much of the day, surfing blogs and online magazines, we decided we could forgo spending money on magazines. However, every so often we just can’t resist the urge… when we see them for sale at incredibly inexpensive prices.Where do we find them for less than the price of a cup of coffee?Our go-to place is actually our local library, where they sell them for between 50 cents and a buck.

    Are Essential Oils Like Lavender Safe for Cats?
    We started looking for natural remedies to our cats’ problems, including fleas, allergies and mood swings, after realizing that our kitties were very sensitive to some of the chemical treatments we had been given at the vet. As soon as we opened a tube of Advantage, even if it was in another room, our cat P. Kitty would be nowhere in sight.

    How To: Keep Silver Tarnish-Free
    We thought we’d share with you our tried-and-true method — call it the lazy person’s way — of keeping our vintage silver tarnish-free.We assume it works because the jar is air-tight — we use the silver every day, but obviously not every single piece. (We haven’t noticed scratching, but we don’t actually just toss it in there. And since all of it is vintage, and most of it is from the flea market, scratches are okay with us.

    Bac-Out Stain & Odor Eliminator by Biokleen

    SF Good Questions: Queen Mattress on a King Frame?
    AT:SF, I have a queen-sized mattress from DWR that I love & have no plan to get rid of it. There is someone on Craigslist selling a platform bed that DWR used to sell that is made from solid walnut w/a matching slanted & very tall vertical headboard (used to be called the Blu Notte). The seller is letting it go for $1,500 & I think they must have paid around $4-$5K for it.

    How To: Build Staircase Drawers
    Remember these stairs? We slinked to them earlier this year after AT:LA blogged them. It turns out that they were made by an Australian company, Unicraft Joinery. We’ve been haunted by them ever since, but were somewhat dissuaded by the naysayers on Lifehacker and Unclutterer… However, we finally found some DIY instructions.     More storage. Seattle reader Dirk wrote to us about his Dishwasher-to-Cabinet Project, in which he reclaimed the space taken up by a functional, but unused dishwasher…Goals of the project: Replace the dishwasher with a cabinet, blend it in reasonably well, and yet allow the process to be easily reversed in case a future owner wants a dishwasher. I achieved all of this with a few hand tools and a visit to IKEA.

    Good Questions: Sound-Dampening Paint?
    AT,We just moved into a 6-unit Victorian that’s only slightly less drafty and for the first time in our adult lives we can really hear our neighbors. We’re considering something we discovered online – sound dampening/deadening paint, with two goals in mind: 1. keep our neighbors from hearing us and 2. keep us from hearing our neighbors. We’re mostly coping with footfalls and voices, not nuisance-level noise.

    Good Questions: Slippery Mattress Topper?
