Name:Allie& Travis Hackett-Camacho and their dog, Brody
Location:Lynn-Highland Park; Oakland, CA
Size:1,300 square feet
Years lived in:3.5年;租来的

Allie may look familiar to Apartment Therapy readers, as her twin sister Caitlin’s home—Caitlin & Dave’s Oakland Apartment of Wonder & Oddities—was recently featured. And although Allie has a lot of her sister’s artwork on display, she and Travis have a different decor style, utilizing minimal elements and more color to create a cozy space in a bright and spacious home.

Allie and Travis moved to their East Oakland neighborhood a little over three years ago, after living in San Diego—Travis’ hometown—for a few years. Allie is atoy designer, and Travis is the barrel program manager at Drake’s Brewing Company in nearby San Leandro. They love living in the Lynn-Highland Park neighborhood, which is conveniently located just a few blocks from Allie’s sister’s apartment.

Though Allie takes most of the credit for their home’s decor, Travis offers input on Allie’s decisions and contributes art and decor he enjoys. A Miller High Life beer print he found overlooks the dining room table, and a wood lamp with Edison bulbs he made as a gift for Allie sits in the living room area. When asked what other pieces or decisions he’d contributed to their home, he jokingly said, “I straighten some of the picture frames, too,” at which Allie laughed.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style:Modern, whimsical, eclectic

Inspiration:Apartment Therapy (of course), Apartment 34,Dwell, A Beautiful Mess, Design*Sponge, Etsy, local stores like Nathan & Co, Crimson, and Umami Mart

Favorite Element:Beautiful light, wood floors, and high ceilings

Biggest Challenge:Dust! We live near the freeway and we get so much dust in the house.

What Friends Say:One friend told us we have the “nicest house of anyone they know,” which is a great compliment! Most people love the artwork and how much light and sunshine we get.

Biggest Embarrassment:Our guest room and laundry area have really become storage/catch-all rooms and have not gotten the attention they deserve.

Proudest DIY:The coffee table! I[Allie]designed and built the table myself through a class at the Crucible in West Oakland (amazing place that offers all kinds of classes). I did all the welding and woodworking, and then had the base professionally powder coated here in Oakland.

Biggest Indulgence:Either the coffee table (because the class was pretty costly) or our Room & Board sofa, which I am in love with; we bought it secondhand but it still was expensive for us!

Best Advice:当你正在寻找新的为你的家check local flea markets, Craigslist, thrift stores, etc. We waited a long time to get sofas we love but we did it for a fraction of the cost of buying new. Also don’t be afraid to really decorate your rental, make it feel like home!
