We New Yorkers feel lucky when we’ve got a sliver of balcony space, and we want to make the most of it — even if the area is only wide enough to accommodate a couple of window boxes. Here are 10 modern planters that attach to a balcony wall or fit over balustrades and railings.

  1. TheSteckling Cube by Rephormis a basic modern container designed to fit over a balustrade with a maximum diameter of 60 mm. Sold through European retailer Connox, it’s €39.
  2. Made from recycled plastic water bottles,Wally Woolly Pockets, start at $39 and can be hung on a balcony railing or wall.
  3. Chicago store Jayson Home & Garden sells some beautiful, simpleWall and Balcony Troughs, starting at $40. For more money, you can buy them pre-planted.
  4. A prototype not yet in productino, Royer and Thirion’sModern Planter for Urban Balconyis a modular, contemporary design. The modules — made from sheet metal, rubber аnd plastic — hook over a balcony balustrade.
  5. Another prototype, the Modular Small-Space Balcony by Christian Lessing combines a vertical rack with adjustable seats, tables surfaces, and planters.
  6. Available through A Plus R in Los Angeles, theGreenbo Railing Balcony Planter($28) is a simple, chic rail planter made from UV-protected, high-quality polypropylene.
  7. HangingBoskke Sky Plantersare distributed internationally — in the US you can find them throughSprout Home,Velocity Art and Design, and various museum stores.
  8. Sold through Anthropologie spinoff Terrain, theHarvest Garden($268) is an attractive wall-mounted version of a vertical garden.
  9. Generate Design sells the artyHaisui Planter, $45. Created by Nobuhiro Sato, the wall-hung design resembles a miniature manhole.
  10. Online catalog company Gardener’s Supply sells several basic railing planters for balconies — the30-inch versionshown above is priced at $35.
