A “Bohemian Maximalist” Apartment in Chelsea Packs a Ton of Style into 600 Square Feet

Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there:My husband and I are California transplants that have collected art and items from our travels and experiences. In California, we had space, but in NYC, with limited square footage, we’ve proudly adopted a maximalist style. Our home has gone through some evolutions as we remodeled and revised from a subtle mid-century and then Art Deco aesthetic.

I am an artist/hairstylist/designer with education in landscape architecture and have been a hairstylist for 15+ years now. I would say that I’m the driving force behind our style, but my husband, who works at a social media company, has a strong aesthetic eye, and we collaborate well. Ultimately we never wanted to take on a full period style as that tends to hinder evolution in regards to home style or collecting. The bohemian maximalist style allows us to add and take away and still maintain a strong style. But whatever style, we strongly filter with: Does someone feel comfortable in our home and can put their feet up while we visit?

I would say that most folks’ (at least my age) identity reflects in their home and mine certainly does. Personally, whether it’s in my business, emotional and mental presence, or personal style, I want to push boundaries while maintaining approachability. Our home does that.

什么是你最喜欢的room and why?We think our bathroom is. (Although with the recent changes to the living room and a new sofa, it might come very close.) Because it’s sexy. The tile takes up one whole wall, and the dark gray-blue paint color just makes you want to hang out here despite it being small. Most guests tend to be drawn to the bathroom as well.

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home?We upgraded our sofa. We had a gray fabric and, frankly, bland sofa previously. Now the cognac-color leather sofa with the green-gray wall has literally changed the room.

Any advice for creating a home you love?My advice: Whatever style you take, make it comfortable, homey. Make it so that people don’t want to leave (a problem we face, lol) and again, that says, “go ahead and put your feet up.”
