In The New Yorker, Susan Orleans wrote about her experience raising chickens in upstate New York. Her article explained the raising popularity of chickens as pets, and mentioned this chicken coop hacked from IKEA items. Can you guess which IKEA pieces have been used? Betty Draper’s Victorian fainting sofa that clashes with her “new” 1963 decor in the TV show Mad Men caused a fuss yesterday in our post The Drapers’ New Living Room Decor. Fainting sofas conjure up images of feeble women in tight corsets who faint at the slightest upset. We’re in the middle of a move and stressed out about living in limbo. Half-unpacked with stuff spread between our old and new place, we’re still deciding what to sell, donate, purge, or move. Susan Yanero paints clowns, cats, horses, creepy dolls, and antiques. She is known to scour antique shops to find strange objects that inspire her to paint. The Washington Post features the lovely home of Loi Thai, co-owner of Bethesda furnishings store Tone on Tone. The former cramped, dark house was renovated over 18 months into an open, airy, light-filled space. Loi Thai decorated his home with gray walls, white floors, and furniture covered in neutral-colored upholstery.Loi Thai claims that a pale palette “makes you feel good, relaxed and soothing.

Perhaps because of the long, cold winters, summer cottages have special meaning in Canada. HGTV Canada created the show “Sarah’s Cottage,” which features designer Sarah Richardson’s cottage renovations. Once her husband’s off-the-grid bachelor shack, the island cottage gets turned into a family vacation home with room for guests.

The home has warm, exposed brick walls and wood beams. The condo feels much larger than its 962 square feet because of the open rooms and natural light.

Eight-foot ceilings used to be standard but many new DC condo buildings now boast ceiling heights of at least 10 feet. Ra’ed and David lowered the ceiling in their contemporary condo, accentuating the ceiling with midnight blue paint (shown here). In a recent Slate article, Witold Rybczynski asks if high ceilings are “wretched architectural excessive or just good taste?” Do you like high or low ceiling heights?

Almost every item is hidden, including the fridge, to keep the clean, white design of the space as open as possible. The children, aged 8 and 11, sleep on a bunk bed and keep their toys in hidden cupboards. The dog is a big, black Labrador named Scott who photographs very well in the white apartment.The father, Cyril Aouizerate, lived in this space alone before having a family. He bravely turned it into a home for his family of four and a dog!
