Before and After: A Builder-Grade Bathroom Gets a Sleek Redo with a Botanical Twist

The tile is a major upgrade from what existed before: a plain black and white 2010s guest bathroom that Ana calls “rather dark and gloomy.” Ana’s goals for her bathroom reno? She wanted to make the space more personal and more functional. (Note that the before has zero color, as well as a pedestal sink with no storage options underneath it and a shower with an easy-to-trip-on ledge.)

The after is a showstopper, achieving all that and more. The centerpiece is the new patterned tile that Ana says has “just enough of a rainforest-like appearance without going over the top.” (Anna got hers from a tile retailer in Peru, where she lives, but you can find similar styles atThe Tile Shop.)

“It’s simple yet interesting,” she adds. “I wanted to bring some green inside, with the wood-like touches on the floor and mirror edges.” Plus, she says, this is a great way to bring plants into a windowless space.

Ana worked with an architect, her friend Uchi, to bring her vision to life. She swapped the old floors for LVT with a wood look, replaced the countertops with a lighter porcelain option (which was cheaper and more durable than marble, Ana says), added a new toilet and a matte black vessel sink, and leveled out the shower floor. That final piece “also made the bathroom floor look seamless,” Ana says.

In the shower itself, a wood wall and niche “allow for volume and space for toiletries,” Ana says.

Of course, her favorite project they tackled in the space was the feature wall with large-scale hex tiles, which she couldn’t be happier with. Ana says tiling all the way to the ceiling draws the eye upward in the space, making the ceiling appear higher. She even has a few leftover tiles that she’s planning to use for another DIY.

Ana also added some sneaky storage under the sink with a floating melamine shelf and a towel bar. She also added a towel hook on the wall that matches her new black hardware. Anna’s mirror was a budget find from a store in Peru, but you can find similar ones fromLulu and Georgia,West Elm, orTarget. The whole bathroom reno came in at about $10,000, and the transformation is striking. Now, the boring old bathroom is a gorgeous space peppered with botanical touches.
