A few months ago, I was running errands on New York City’s Fifth Avenue when I stepped intoAnthropologieand was immediately drawn to a table at the center of the store. It held an entire collection of tabletop accessories in a striking black, gold, and white pattern that combined New York City subway tiles with Art Deco aesthetics. There werestorage canisterswith delightful phrases printed on them, pretty measuring cups, charming bread plates, bowls with delicate handles, and the perfect little luxury, monogrammed mugs.

I instantly felt an urge to grab something—anything—because it would make a great gift for someone. But I ended up doing something I’ve never done before: I grabbed theTiled Margot Monogram Mug, had it wrapped in Anthro’s signature yellow box and topped with a cheery message, and gifted it to myself!

The mug quickly became a joyful part of my daily coffee routine. So much so that I decided to share my happiness and lugged a pair of them—plus acouple of canisters, matchingmonogrammed coasters, and aspoon rest—across the pond to give to a friend as a wedding present. The gift received so many delightful squeals that I’ve since given out 15 more mugs to various people, for various occasions. I’ve used it as a hostess gift, a present for a professor’s retirement party, a bridal shower gift basket addition, and a thank-you gesture for a thoughtful neighbor who once sent me a bowl hot soup when I was sick.

So far, everyone has loved the mug. Maybe it’s the exquisite black and gold detailing, or the joy of finding a gift that’s so personalized and luxe-looking. Either way, this mugis, to me, the perfect little inexpensive treat that feels both intimate and special.
