About a year ago, I was a woman on a mission. I was going to find nice white sheets for my family that felt great, would last, and that wouldn’t feel like I spent too much money for kids who probably don’t enjoy a good set of sheets as much as their mother does.

As I’m wont to do when I need a new item for my home, I dug into research, tapping sources likeThe Sweethome—the domestic sphere of the Wirecutter—and Apartment Therapy for answers, also turning to numerous Google searches for a recommendation that wouldn’t let me down.

What I found was a pretty consistent answer across the Internet:Target’s Threshold Performance 400 Thread Count sheet setwas recommended again and again. A budget conscious pick that people loved to love? Perfect!

But as I looked at the reviews on Target’s site, I had mixed feelings. There were rave reviews like the following:

From Ellie: Finally found the perfect sheets!

I like a cotton sheet but it has to feel silky. I don’t want to slip into bed and feel like I am on waxed paper. These sheets are very smooth. They wash like a dream. My mattress is older and isn’t overly thick (9″). This bottom sheet fits with ample room. With a King-Sized bed, sometimes it takes 2 attempts to get the bottom sheet in the right direction. Not with this set! There is a tag on the side that says “side”! Genius, I tell you…genius. I chose the Seagull and love the cool, smooth grey. Perfect neutral.
From LAmom: Love them

I bought 2 sets in grey, 1 in beige, and 1 blue. They are now the only ones I use. The fitted sheet is deep with excellent elastic that hugs my deep, adjustable mattress beautifully; even when the bed moves up and down, it stays firmly in place. The stitching is even and high quality. They wash well with almost no wrinkling; no fading; no shrinkage; after two years of weekly washing, they still look new. The slight sheen of the polished cotton is very attractive and comfortable against the skin. I highly recommend.

But these all-star reviews were tempered with ones that described how the sheets must have been changed because theyusedto be great but now they’re different or that they shred easily. There was even an incident of toes poking through the sheets!

I decided it was worth it to try them out for myself. If they felt awful or seemed to be of poor quality, I’d return them.

Well, I loved them instantly. They felt soft and just thick enough but not stiff in the slightest. They are technically sateen but they feel like soft percale and are definitely cool sheets (important in Florida!). My kids even noticed how comfortable they are. And the best part is the wide and strong elastic that helps the sheets stay put, whether the mattress is thick or thin. They have stood up well to multiple hot water washings, showing zero signs of wear after a full year of use.

My search for affordable sheets that boast the kind of quality and comfort of sheets that are much more expensive (even surpass our more spendy sheets, honestly), is over. Target, don’t ever change them!
