For the longest time, vinyl flooring has been as a compromise rather than a design choice made with confidence and enthusiasm. Yes, it’s budget-friendly, durable and easy to clean. But has it been the kind of material that others would devote a Pinterest board to? Not so much.

In recent years, big and small brands alike have taken a new approach tovinyl floor products. There are designs that mimic high-end finishes (like the faux marble in the fabulous kitchen ofChris Loves Julia, above) to colorful patterns that give a room plenty of personality.

If you love a vinyl floor product in a bold pattern but don’t want to commit to a whole room, use it as an accent. Here, a cute pattern fromUK brand Harvey Mariacreates a runner effect in an entryway.

You can also use peel-and-stick vinyl planks can go beyond floors and onto the wall, like in this playroom by Julia Fain ofTag and Tibby. Julia’s main reason for choosing peel-and-stick is that she didn’t want to have to use power tools for the project. And like we said — you can’t beat the budget-friendly price.

Vinyl floor tile also lends itself well to experimenting with pattern. Allison fromShark Tailscreated a herringbone pattern in her half-bath using a vinyl product in a slate finish for a more luxe look.

You can also cut square tiles on the diagonal to create new patterns. This bold floor seen onA Beautiful Messstylishly upgrades plain black and white tiles.
