Around this time every year, I descend upon themini gourds crateat my local Trader Joe’s, apple orchard, or farmer’s market like a kid to candy. I have no self control when it comes to scooping up these oddly-shaped squashes or snow whiteminiature pumpkinsand sprinkling them all around my apartment. And then… leaving them there months past being seasonally appropriate. Though they last a long time, I’m always a little afraid to touch them and find they’ve gone the way of the big pumpkin I put on my deck last fall (rotted and absolutely destroyed by squirrels).

But before I could get my hands on some tiny pumpkins this fall, I spotted an alternative in my localDollar Tree: tiny pumpkins of all kinds that will never go bad at all, because they’re not real! The Dollar Tree is an incredible spot to snag all kinds of holiday decor for, literally, dollars, and theirHalloween and autumn baublesare no exception.

Stroll their blissfully cheap aisles or peruse their website and you’ll findpumpkins made of velvet, faux leather varieties, pretty pastel ones made of faux wool, vibrant metallic versions, and evenones that light up! You can buy your own patch of small, glittering pumpkins with a $10 bill and keep it up year round if you so please. They are the artificial Christmas tree of Halloween.

A 4-inch or about hand-sized fake pumpkin costs $1.25, or you can find smaller ones in bundles for the same price. I opted for a pack ofthree cuties wrapped in orange-brown burlapand topped with a gold stem for just over a dollar. They come with clips adhered to the bottom which, I’ll be honest, I didn’t realize when I bought them, but I have now gleefully clipped them around my apartment onto the pull cords on my blinds and ceiling fan — no dangling surface is safe from my autumn-fication! While I’m sure I’ll be picking up some delightfully bumpy gourds in the coming weeks, I love my new Dollar Store additions that I’ll get to keep for years to come.
