Yes, new construction may not necessarily havethe character you find in an older home—but it can provide plenty of opportunities to customize and create something that suits your vision. So whendesigner Sandra Funk’s从纽约搬到新客户Jersey suburbs, they brought her on to help turn the still relatively plain house into a cozy home with some truly glamorous touches.

一个房间的房子,特别是lackluster: the powder room on the first floor, which was just four walls of beige—not even a mirror to break it up! “Before, the powder room was your run-of-the-mill new construction bathroom: poorly lit, greige, no personality,” Sandra says. But the good news was, it was completely functional—and the vanity, with its open shape and polished nickel legs, had potential. The rest just needed some zhuzhing up. Thankfully, Sandra had a plan.

“The overall request was for the home to feel relaxing, comfortable, playful, adult-ish, sophisticated and chic,” Sandra says. “Their must-haves for the powder room were great lighting, a statement wallpaper, and luxurious details.” A tall order! Sandra started by putting floral wallpaper byEllie Cashmanon all four walls; the dark background makes the pattern feel dramatic, and totally 2020.

Rather than sticking with fixtures that have all the same finish, as had been the case in the bathroom previously, Sandra mixed in a bit of gold with the round gold-framed mirror from Rejuvenation and the gold vanity light. The kicker comes overhead, with a ceiling that’s completely covered in gold leaf. “In a room this small, it’s all about the details,” Sandra says. And the result is exactly as she pictured: “Powder rooms are the small, unsung heroes of the home,” Sandra says. “The goal for this powder room was to create a wow moment.”
