You Can Stay a Night at a Frank Lloyd Wright House — Or Four

Tom and Heather Papinchak have created a haven for Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiasts in the middle of a Pennsylvania forest. The FLW destination is calledPolymath Park, and it’s an assemblage of four Wright-designed and inspired homes that are available to tour and/or stay in for a night.

Tom Papinchak bought the 130-acre lot in 2003, along with two homes — Balter House and Blum House — that sat on the property, designed by Wright apprentice and Taliesian fellow Peter Berndtson. He tirelessly restored both mid-century modern houses and then he and Heather began offering tours before finally deciding to make the park an overnight experience.

The Papinchaks then came across an abandoned house in Lisle, Illinois that was designed by Wright himself. To save it from destruction, Tom deconstructed the Duncan House piece by piece, packed the entire thing in shipping containers, and then reassembled it at Polymath Park.

“I’ve always had this inner stirring to make a difference,” Tom toldCBS Sunday Morningof dismantling and saving the Duncan House. “And I think that was kind of the beginning of that, realizing that, ‘Okay, this is my path.'” Once the Duncan House was open, the place was booked up almost immediately.

The latest addition to Polymath Park is Mäntylä, Finnish for “House of the Pines,” which was donated to the park by Peter and Julene McKinney. Mäntylä was designed for Julene’s grandparents by Wright back in the 1950s.

You can stay at any one of the four homes at Polymath Park or visit the park for the day and go on a guided tour of each of the properties. Each home has been restored to its original mid-century glory and is waiting for you to appreciate the glory of a Wright-designed masterpiece.
