Friends Thanksgiving Retrospective

Hands down, my favorite episodes fromFriendsare the Thanksgiving episodes. One of the reasons I enjoyed these episodes so much is because I’ve always been a huge fan of the set design and tabletop wares in Monica’s kitchen. Greg Grande was the set director who created Monica’s famous kitchen.

He wanted to develop a “whole new kind of eclectic taste” and created a “flea-market, whimsical, and an anything-goes style.” This style was original then, and extremely sought after once the show began to air. I always loved the casual atmosphere of the gang eating in Monica’s kitchen for Thanksgiving; not too formal, just comfortable and cozy. A little behind the scenes secret: these episodes were especially difficult to shoot because they involved the entire cast plus special guests altogether on the apartment set for the entirety of the episode. This meant that every cast member had continuing storylines and blocking while on camera for the full half-hour.

Looking back on these Thanksgiving images today anditchingto have Monica’s kitchen as my own, I’m wondering why I thought I needed to buy that formal gravy boat in the first place and, maybe I won’t worry quite so much about how none of my serving pieces match enough for some people’s taste. If any of my guests complain? Who knows, maybe I’ll have a box handy for them to spend the dinner in, minus Chandler’s company of course. As I do every year, I’ll be fishing these episodes out from their DVD’s set to enjoy in the next couple of weeks!
