Name:Evanand Gavin Gregory
Location:Parkwood — Shoreline (Seattle), Washington
Size:920 square feet
Years lived in:7.5 years, owned

On an unassuming residential street in a suburb just north of Seattle, you’ll find a house down a hill, surrounded by bushes and hidden by a fence. One step into Evan and Gavin’s front yard and it feels as though you’ve been transported to a relaxing sanctuary far from the bustle of the city.

Renovation projects have opened up Evan and Gavin’s floor plan and created a welcoming environment with a strong connection to their outdoor spaces. The often changing decor has a modern mid-century feel and has come together with the help of antique and thrift shops. Their home is full (of both objects and animals) but doesn’t feel cluttered or overpowering. Evan and Gavin have done an excellent job of making this space, both inside and out, their own.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style:We love layering our home with graphic patterns, organic textures, natural materials and pops of color along with the clean lines of our Mid-Century Modern elements to create a unique modern style that expresses both of us!

Inspiration:We are constantly inspired by new pieces that we find on Craigslist or at thrift stores etc… So, our home is ever changing depending on what we find. We love the hunt and the creativity that comes from figuring out how to incorporate new finds into our space. I’ve re-decorated entire rooms around one single new piece! Also, our pets are a huge inspiration to us, which is why I startedModernist Catback in 2010; to stylishly meld their needs with our love for Mid Century Modern Design.

最喜欢的Element:The indoor/outdoor feel that we created in the kitchen by adding the double-sliding door to the front yard and single slider to the backyard. Originally those areas only had smaller windows which didn’t open.

Biggest Challenge:Remodeling/building our bathrooms and kitchen! We did most of the work ourselves, so it was a big accomplishment for us.

What Friends Say:Our friends are very impressed with how we’ve transformed our home and yard from its original shabby state into a small modern oasis!

Biggest Embarrassment:Our hardwood floors could really use refinishing and our entryway is a project that still needs to get completed.

Proudest DIY:The backyard. We literally excavated the existing yard and started from scratch. One massive work party and 37 cubic yards of gravel, soil, mulch later… it was renewed and ready for planting. We even made the pavers ourselves!

Biggest Indulgence:It’s a tie between the Kasala Lounger in the living room and the Totem Pole!

Best Advice:Shop on Craigslist and scour local thrift stores and antique shops for unique one-of-a-kind affordable finds! Plus, don’t be afraid to make mistakes because you will. I’ve repainted every room in our house two or three times in order to get the colors just right. But most importantly, express who you are in your space.

Dream Sources:Thrift stores, antique shops, Craigslist, Ebay, Google…
