Louise and her family have the best of both worlds: a lovely old home on a large block with gumtrees and only a 30-minute drive to the city. The old house suits Louise’s style perfectly, as her home is full of furniture from her grandparents, and finds from antique shops, thrift stores and local makers.

What I loved most about Louise’s home is the sentimentality that is found in every room. Every room has an element that can remind her of a family member, which brings so much more meaning to the spaces. Portraits of Louise and Brett’s wedding adorn many walls and corners, as well as family portraits with their children among artwork from modern Australian artists and thrift stores. Louise is a calligrapher and founder ofFloralovely, specializing in hand-written stationery, and the home is filled with the same attention to detail as her handwritten words.

Inspiration:Antique furniture and curiosities, plant life, floral design, my family.

Favorite Element:我爱,我能够把家庭heirlooms into our daily life. The fact that we’re still using these things and some of them have been in the family for over a hundred years is just so special. Those items are irreplaceable. I also really enjoy plants around our home; I feel like having houseplants gives life and energy to a space. If you ask my husband I think he’d say his favourite element is the old cattle grid, which is at the beginning of our driveway. We don’t have cattle obviously, but the area where we live used to be dairy farms so it’s safe to say it’s been there for a long time. Brett says that as he drives over the rattly grid each afternoon, he feels like he’s shaking off the work day.

Biggest Challenge:Cooking in the kitchen in summer time! It gets so hot in there and the way the house has evolved, someone built in the side verandah, which means the dining room is enclosed in the middle of the house. The kitchen/dining area of the house lacks airflow and natural light unfortunately. One day we’ll renovate the kitchen/dining/living area!

What Friends Say:That our home has a “great feel” to it. I take it to mean our friends and family feel welcome and relaxed here, which is what we want!

Biggest Embarrassment:The linen storage room — go in there to find a fresh bath towel and you might never find your way out! Oh and our poor old couch! It’s not nice to look at (the couch cover always looks disheveled) and due to its age it’s not even comfortable to sit on any more.

Proudest DIY:Being busy with my business and young family, I haven’t done much DIY’ing in the last few years! The baby change table is a special one though; I re-painted and put new handles on it while my father-in-law made the custom-built top. And I do love the simple mobile I made for the nursery recently.

Biggest Indulgence:Our Kara Rosenlund print in the dining room. My husband and I both loved it when we attended Kara’s book launch and print exhibition in Brisbane in early 2016. There’s something about the quietness of the print. It’s peaceful and inviting; I just want to know what is in the old hut!

Best Advice:Don’t buy items for your home because they are “on-trend.” Buy them because they fit your style. And add plants. Always add plants!
