Bethany Chase is a woman of many talents. Besides being an interior designer, she’s also the author of two novels, includingResults May Vary, which was just published this fall. Her Brooklyn apartment reflects her love for both literature and design, and her understanding of the deep importance of the places we call home.

The apartment’s main room, the living room, is painted in a deep navy blue, but your first impression upon walking in is one of lightness and airiness. Tall ceilings, and a skylight overhead, fill this top-floor space with light. The little dining table, a recent addition, allows Bethany and her husband to eat meals at a table just like real grown-ups — a real luxury for New York apartment living.

A strong sense of color is apparent in the other parts of the apartment as well. In Bethany’s office, an accent wall and colorful Panton chair add a cheerful burst of energy, and in the bedroom two red nightstands almost glow against a blue wall. One of my favorite elements was the “1776” chair, which occupies the wall next to the bedroom door. This is definitely a space full of character and style.

Bethany’s love for, and understanding of, the power of spaces is very apparent in her writing, and you just might find yourself a little transported, much like you would with a very good house tour.

Inspiration:My favorite designers are Roman & Williams, Jessica Helgerson, Thom Filicia, Nickey Kehoe. I love a warm, lived-in look with a lot of layered texture and neutral pattern.

Favorite Element:The high ceilings. They make the space feel larger even though the dimension goes up and not around.

Biggest Challenge:Having enough storage.

What Friends Say:Oh my gosh I love your place!

Biggest Embarrassment:The fact that the place is usually a lot messier than this!

Proudest DIY:The artwork. A few pieces are mine, and many more are by the various artists in my family (my mother, my great-uncle, my great great grandfather).

Best Advice:Always mix it up. Source from lots of different places, including vintage/antique sources.
