Name:JordanaandTrentNicholson

Location:Nashville, Tenneesee
Size:Roughly 1,200 square feet
Years lived in:1 year, renting

Jordana and Trent’s Nashville home is a space of tranquil comfort with an abundance of natural light that they’ve worked to make a personal sanctuary…even if their living situation is only temporary. The couple is currently renting the ’60s style ranch house from friends who are traveling through South America. But though they won’t be in this home forever, they’ve worked with the existing paint and permanent objects in the house to create a space that is well-designed, ultra cozy, and personal.

Trent is a graphic designer and native to Nashville. Jordana is a photographer and videographer (much of her work is with families) and originally hails from Canada. Their home is a reflection of their passions and is dotted with beautiful artwork, especially photographs, visible in every room. They take inspiration from design websites and from cool classic style but really focus on their personal likes and instincts to create a space that is unique to them, a place of pride and a place to call home. They’re also inspired by European antiques and old world design, which you can see all around the home with brass finishes, oil paintings, and subtle earth tones mixed with rich deep colors.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style:I feel like my style is a little all over the place. It’s so hard to describe. I love modern clean lines and neutral colors, but also love quirky pieces and beautifully patterned textiles. I love for every room in the home to feel cozy, comfortable and lived-in. I would say my style is a bit old world with European/modern flair? I don’t even know if that’s a thing, but it sounds about right in my head.

Inspiration:I’m forever gathering inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram design pages. A few favorites include: Amber Interiors, Emily Henderson, Sarah Sherman Samuel, and Jersey Ice Cream Co.!

Favorite Element:Old wood floors will always win me over. I love that this home is carpet-free and that the wood floors carry into the kitchen. It just creates so much warmth and always makes decorating a breeze. I also love the space in this home. It’s a ranch-style from the ’60s and it just feels so spacious to us, especially after coming from a 750-square-foot home. I also adore ourSix Penny Wood & Marble Tablein the dining room. It adds so much character to the space and I love how warm the marble coloring is.

Biggest Challenge:I wouldn’t call this a bad challenge, but with the living room being so narrow, it forced us to get creative with the overall layout. I love a good challenge! I think we did a pretty decent job with where we placed furniture and such. The flow feels good and not too cluttered or claustrophobic.

What Friends Say:That our space just feels so comfortable and homey. That’s the greatest compliment. I love a well-designed home, but it has to feel livable and comfortable to me. I feel like we’ve achieved that.

Biggest Embarrassment:Nothing actually! I don’t think there’s anything to be embarrassed about. This is our home (even though we rent) and we’re proud of the spaces we’ve created and that our style is unique to us.

Proudest DIY:To be honest, we aren’t the handiest couple, ha! So we’re pretty proud of the floating shelf in our bedroom! Trent made it and it turned out beautifully.

Biggest Indulgence:我们尽量不要挥霍太多,非常喜欢thrifting and buying secondhand when we can, but there are some pieces that should just be of the best quality. For us, those pieces would have to be our Sven Sofa and Seno Sideboard (where the TV sits) by Article. We also splurged a bit on the antique piano in our living room. We scored it on Facebook Marketplace. It’s in immaculate condition and it’s just one of our favorite pieces in the house. I love when Trent sits down to play in the evenings. It’s kind of romantic, too.

Best Advice:Create a space that you’re proud of. It’s perfectly fine to draw inspiration from different sources, but try not to replicate a space that you’ve seen. I’ve made that mistake a few times and grew so tired of the overall space. With social media and constant inspiration all around us, it’s so easy nowadays to follow trends.

Dream Sources:Beautiful European antiques, oil paintings, Venetian plastered walls, wide plank wood floors and tall French windows that swing open. Basically I just need to live in Europe some day.
