Greg and Becky don’t have any particular favorite time period of design. Nor do they hold any allegiances to any brands or designers. Truthfully? They just buy what they like. Influenced heavily by their “groovy friends” and the lively city of Austin, their home is a playful, unique reflection of their two fun personalities. The hashtag for their home is#simpsonchillchamber, so you know lots of casual lounging happens here, too.

An independent designer and illustrator, Becky Simpson is also the author ofThe Roommate Book: Sharing Lives and Slapping FivesandI’d Rather Be Short: 100 Reasons Why It’s Great to Be Small.Perhaps most excitedly, she’s the owner ofChipper Things, where you can purchase her clever prints and drawings (I dare you not to smile at a single one of her pieces).

Definitely most importantly, Becky is the person who brought us the brilliant flowcharts “Should I wash my hair today?“, “Should I wear pants today?” and “How much is too much pizza?” We all owe Becky a lot of thanks for these things existing. But don’t think she’s the sole reason the Simpson Chill Chamber is a good-looking home:

Our Style:Mid-century modern meets estate sale meets Greg’s love for West Elm meets Becky’s quirky doodads

Inspiration:I wish I had a sentimental answer, or even a shoutout to our favorite time period, but we really just buy what we like. We’re influenced by our environment (Austin!) and our groovy friends and pieces with character that we pick up from special places.

Favorite Element:The floor to ceiling windows. The plants are a close second.

Biggest Challenge:保持黑暗地板清洁!当他们干净,they look real real nice, but when they’re dirty, there is no hiding it.

What Friends Say:“Now I can see why they call it the Simpson Chill Chamber.” — Said no one in real life, but everyone in our dreams.

People assume I’m the decorator because I’m a designer/illustrator, but what they don’t know is that Greg is the Emily Henderson of this home.

Biggest Embarrassment:When we first moved in, we really let the outside go. Since it’s all rock, we weren’t prepared for all the weeds. It got real ugly real fast. 60+ plants later (rosemary and santolina in the front bed) and totally redoing the entire rock yard, we now have a good looking exterior.

Proudest DIY:Greg and our friend Austin built the industrial bookshelf in the reading room. It really brings the room together and makes for a cozy reading space.

Biggest Indulgence:I love buying plants. Greg loves buying furniture. I get to indulge more than he does.

Best Advice:Per Greg:“Buy the stuff you love so you can keep it forever.” With that said, it takes time to furnish an entire home with that mindset. We’re happy to slowly replace some of our “meh” items with more meaningful ones. It won’t happen overnight.

Also: You really get what you pay for when it comes to rugs. That goes for a lot of things, but definitely for rugs.

Dream Sources:The dream would be a Supermarket Sweep-esque local maker shopping spree, but one where the local maker makes a ton of money, but we can somehow afford all of it??? We’d love to support more friends, artists and small business owners who make interesting, heirloom work.
