Julie Andrews and Her Daughter Have a Storytime Podcast for Kids

Whether we first watched her inThe Sound of Music,Mary Poppins, orThe Princess Diaries, many of us grew up withJulie Andrews, and now a younger generation can do the same. Dame Andrews recently launched astorytimepodcast with American Public Media calledJulie’s Library.

Each week, she and her daughter, children’s book author Emma Walton Hamilton, will read a new story, geared toward kids aged four to 10. The series began on April 29 withMarilyn’s Monster, written by Michelle Knudsen and illustrated by Matt Phelan.

Along with the hosts’ dramatic readings, music helps bring the stories to life. Before and after the story, the mother-daughter duo discuss the book together. WithMarilyn’s Monster, they cover topics like feeling left behind when your friends reach a milestone before you do, or what kind of monster you’d like to befriend if you lived in Marilyn’s world. Each episode also includes a special guest and an activity for listeners to try at home, which you can find on the podcast’swebsite.

“When I became a parent, I passed the love of reading on to my children. My daughter and I have co-authored over 30 books for children and young adults, and our shared passion for the power of storytelling, literacy, and the arts remains fervent,” said Andrews inan announcement from American Public Media.

“It is our hope that the stories and ideas we share on Julie’s Library will provide family listening pleasure, inspire meaningful conversations, and be a trusted resource for literary enjoyment and learning.”

In the second episode of Julie’s Library, Andrews and Hamilton read two books:Bears Don’t Eat Egg SandwichesandThe Wolf, the Duck, and the Mouse. The next episode comes out this Wednesday, May 13. You can tune in on theJulie’s Librarywebsite or wherever you listen to podcasts.
