Before and After: A $500 Equestrian-Inspired Kids’ Room Makeover

Suzanne’s daughter used to enjoy her own room—but with a new baby on the way, she’d need to start sharing space with her sister. “I wanted to make their room a special space for them to enjoy together,” Suzanne says. Before, “It was just furnished, but not a lot of extra detail was added.” Luckily, both girls are “head-over-boots” (as Suzanne puts it) in love with horses, so picking a theme was easy.

To start off her horse-inspired makeover, Suzanne painted a cheerful coral color block effect around the wall, which took about a day. To keep the budget low (and prevent any injuries), she skipped bunk beds in favor of matching white metal beds for the girl, which contrast beautifully with the coral.

Suzanne went full equestrian with the rest of the decor. Matching horse glam shots are framed above each daughter’s bed, and the Western hat wall completes the look. A shared wood nightstand evokes a rustic feel.

All together, the kids’ room renovation cost about $500: $100 for the paint and $400 for the furniture and decor. To compensate for the cost, they sold some old, unused furniture, making this merry makeover extremely affordable.

“We love the color choice and the life it brings to the room,” Suzanne says. “I wouldn’t do anything differently. In fact, I want to add some more color blocking and bright colors in other rooms in our house. This room is one of the happiest in our house now!”

Thanks for sharing, Suzanne!
