1. Pick the Right Room

If there’s flexibility in which room you’re settling down in as an adult, try to choose a bedroom that offers something in the way of independence, like its own bathroom or a separate entrance.

2. Outfit it With the Comforts of (Your Own) Home

Being able to implement each of the ideas below is certainly dependent on the amount of space you have available, but think of it as an all-encompassing guide to decide which of these touches of home you want close by in your bedroom (or maybe spilling outside in the hallway, if you can get away with it).

An “Entryway” Piece

Give yourself a place to hang up your coat and keys (by the door, or maybe just outside in the hall).

If youarelucky enough to have your own entrance, my all means, dress it up! Add a welcome mat and some plant stands outside. You’d be surprised what a well-dressed side door will do to make your share of the house feel like home.

Mini Fridge

Skip the dorm-issue fridge and invest in a grown-up model you can re-use in a home bar later in life.

Pantry Storage

Place a closed-off cabinet next to the beverage cooler and you’ve got yourself a serviceable little kitchen for snacks and small meals.

Lounge Furniture

A Home Office

There are two equally great options: A desk with storage, or (if you prefer to work from the aforementioned sofa) a freestanding office cart to store your important files and supplies.

A Vanity Area

In the absence of an en-suite bathroom, it’s nice to have a dry area where you can prep and primp in private.
