For years, filling your home with customized furniture has felt like an unattainable dream. First, there’s the cost: Designing your own pieces is a surefire way to drive up the price. Second, custom furniture can take an extremely long to arrive, what with the time needed to design, craft, and ship it. So, most of us go the easier route and just pick out pieces we like from brands we trust. And sure, most of the time you’ll have a few colors or finishes to choose between, but that doesn’t feel trulypersonal.

With Palette, you can choose from 15 different upholstered pieces, from headboards to chairs to a small space-friendly settee, and then get to work making it your own. The best part? Everything is under a thousand dollars and will arrive in three weeks, which is almost unheard of in the custom decor world.

Once you choose your item the real fun starts. Palette has eight different pattern options—classics like gingham and stripes as well as more unexpected options like lemons and stars—and on the site, as you click on each one the pattern on the piece actually changes so you can visualize what each will look like.

You can also customize the colors. There are suggested color combos for each piece, but you can also hit the “choose your own” option and really play around. The settee above is in the “Raspberry/Sun” suggested colorway, but you can go for a totally different look by changing the colors of the lemons and berries.

And once you’ve nailed down your color and pattern choices you can play around with the scale of the pattern. Each pattern has a small, medium, and large scale option. The settee above shows the lemons in medium, the default option.

The last personalization step is the hardware. Each piece has different details you can customize, like choosing the leg finish or adding nailhead trim or metallic tips.

To bring Palette to life, One Kings Lane worked with Bed Bath & Beyond Inc.’s Innovations Group to create the 3D product visualization technology. Seeing the piece change in front of your eyes as you play with all the options is such a great way to visualize what it will look like in your home, but it’s also just really fun. I honestly spent so much time cycling through the different styles while writing this story because it almost feels like a computer game.

They also partnered withCloth & Companyto make the products come to life. Cloth & Company uses digital printing technology to make the custom fabric used on each piece at their factory in Chicago.

Overall, Palette feels like such a smart and timely addition to the decor market, especially for a brand like One Kings Lane. Home is such a personal thing, so making customization more accessible to consumers (especially when Instagram can leave you feeling like every house looks exactly the same) is a step in the right direction.
