Here’s how they did it: after narrowing their parameters to episodes produced between 1990 and 2021, they combed IMDb for most-viewed New Year’s Eve episodes, filtering out those with fewer than 1,500 votes or ratings below 7.5.

Overall, “Friends” and “The Office” came in joint first, with both of the beloved series being searched for the most in 17 different states—”Friends” dominated the South while “The Office” proved most popular in the Midwestern and Western states. Other popular choices include “The Big Bang Theory”, “Modern Family”, and “How I Met Your Mother”. Check out the map below for a full breakdown.

As for specific episodes, the most popular nationwide is the 1997 “Seinfeld” classic, “The Millennium”. The episode aired as part of season 8 of the show, and received an impressive 29.3 million views upon first airing.

Taking second, third, and fourth place is “Friends”. Season five’s “The One with All the Resolutions” aired in 1999 and has an IMDb rating of 9.1, while season six’s iconic “The One with the Routine” followed closely behind.
