A Small NYC Apartment Fits a Coffee Station in the Bedroom

Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I live here with my mini Aussie, Scout! I’m a copy supervisor at an advertising agency in the city and she’s, well, a dog! This is my third apartment and first solo outing all on my own. Before I lived in a small bedroom with a window that looked into the living room (seriously!) The first thing that caught my eye was in my current apartment was the amount of space and natural, south-facing sunlight.

I’ve always had a romanticized version of adulthood in New York. Growing up watching “Mad Men” and listening to my dad’s record collection definitely did not help this romanticism. This love of slick classics, paired with combatting minimalist and maximalist design choices, led to this apartment.

作为创造性的贸易,和许多的爱好,我的biggest fear was owning a boring/typical apartment. So many apartments are lived in and decorated (if at all) out of utility, not style. With my apartment, I wanted to create a home that not only worked for my basic needs, but encouraged relaxing, gathering, and working.

什么是你最喜欢的房间和why?Living in a one-bedroom, there are only two rooms to choose from! I do find that I spend a majority of my time in the living room for work and for time with friends after work. The sectional perfectly separates the room itself into two distinct areas: the “work” space adjacent to the kitchen and the leisure space along the window.

However, my bedroom gets bonus points for having its own coffee station with an auto-brewer that wakes me up to the smell of coffee daily.

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home?MyAlbany Park sectional! Before I had a love seat that had enough space for half a person, and a lounge chair littered with dog hair. As a tall person, this wasn’t working out as I had expected.

Any advice for creating a home you love?Make it comfortable! Especially nowadays when we’re all spending so much time in our homes — you should enjoy being there! And don’t be afraid to think outside the box or do things against the norm. If it makes you happy and makes your home your home, then damn well do it!
