These Infographics Show How Kitchen Appliances Have Evolved Over the Past 100 Years

Remember those100 Years of Beautyvideos that came out on YouTube between 2014 and 2017, showing how beauty trends have changed over the past century? One company has taken that idea and applied it tokitchen products. In a series of infographics, home improvement websiteHomeAdvisortracked the development of appliances including toasters,coffee makers, and refrigerators over 100-plus years.

Some of the appliances show more dramatic transformation than others. The blender, for example, starts in the 1900s as a mortar and pestle, then begins to look like blenders as we know them in the 1920s. The pressure cooker, meanwhile, pretty much always looks like a lidded pot, though it appears to become electric in the 1940s.

One of the biggest shapeshifters is the juicer. In the 1900s, it’s a simple press with a wooden barrel and metal clamp. In the 1910s, it looks more like a meat grinder, before becoming more streamlined and cylindrical in the 1960s through 80s, then turning into a Super Soaker lookalike in the 1990s. The kettle, meanwhile, has pretty much stayed the same over the past century, just making the transition to electric in the 1990s (and apparently the whistle only became popular in the 1950s).
