Trader Joe’s Is Selling Colorful Sugar Skull Succulents, Starting at $4

Just in case you didn’t get enough Fall decor fromTrader Joe’s yoga skeletons, the grocery chain is back—this time, with succulents that come in colorful sugar skull planters.

The plants, which start at $4, come in both a mini and large size ($10) as well as several different pot colors including blue, red, and purple.Sugar skulls, orcalaveras de azucar, originated in Mexico as a part of theofrenda—the alter for Dia de los Muertos, aka Day of the Dead—and are placed on the alter to honor loved ones. Like the ones found in Trader Joe’s, the skulls are usually bright in color to celebrate the lives of the deceased.

Similar to the air plants found in the yogi skeletons,succulentsare relatively low maintenance and look cute as heck on your Instagram feed. According to the upkeep instructions found on a tag placed in the planter, the succulents need indirect sunlight, a quarter of an inch of water in the pot once per month, and a temperature between 65 and 85 degrees.

Trader Joe’s has been offering seasonal plants for the last few years, so it’s exciting to see these colorful skulls make a reappearance. Even if you’re not doing much decorating for the upcoming Halloween season, these planters are an easy way to get in the seasonal mood. Once the season is over, you can store your sugar skull planter for next year and transfer your succulent into its new home.
