Turtlenecks function perfectly well. In fact, thanks to ample fabric in the neck region, they can be quite a warm delight on a winter’s day. But aesthetically, they can sometimes come off dated, easily veering into the too fussy area, making them a hard-to-pull-off item. Kind of like window valances, amiright?

Though once the crown jewel of a home’s window coverings, valances can be well-meaning, but make your room feel like it stepped out of 1988. Like the turtleneck though, some modern adjustments can make these window toppers look quite fantastic—and surprising—in interiors. In fact, there are some times when a valance could be just the thing your room needs. Here are four such situations:

Some rooms just need that extra punch of bold color, pattern and shape

Look, pattern is a fresh way to add excitement to a room, any where it goes. When applied to a valance, though, you get eye-popping pattern near your windows without having to drape tons of fabric around. Because of the pattern and the unexpected architectural shape and presence of valances, you make your windows big visual focal points and really make a statement with your decor.

They can take your bohemian style to the next level

When a valance isn’t boxy shaped and is more like a fabric that just hangs up top of your window, it’s sometimes referred to as swag. Swag is a more powerful design element than you might realize. Not only can it be easier to implement than trying to hang and install a boxier, sturdier valance, its light weight means you can add some color and pattern up top without perhaps having to drill into rental walls. And a little swag in just the right color, shape and pattern could take your bohemian-styled space to the next level.

Use them to draw the eye up or balance out other strong elements

Strongly colored and patterned curtains can definitely work wonders when it comes to drawing the eyes up, helping a room’s ceiling feel taller and a room feel airier. But you know what is evenmore有效的画eyes up? Dramatic valances. By concentrating a little decor up high atop windows, you can make a room feel tall and stately, as well as successfully balance out a room filled with other bold decor items.

Use them to make your architecture feel more powerful

Sometimes your decor aspirations do not match the architectural canvas you were given. But valances in all their boxy, sturdy glory can add a littleoompfto existing windows, making them feel bigger, connected, morethan they are, and this can make you feel like you’ve got enviable architectural elements (even if you really don’t).
