Before and After: A Beige Bedroom Gets a Zip of Color in an Unexpected Spot for Just $25

When considering how torevamp your bedroom, there are lots of options. Two easy and affordable ones, if you want a big impact? Consider paint, and consider putting it in an unexpected place:the ceiling. After all, you probably spend more time looking at the ceiling in this room than anywhere else.

Not only that, but painting a ceiling can help heighten a room by directing your attention upward, make a bold paint job or colorful decor more cohesive, and show some fun and unexpected attention to detail.

Lezeth Alfaro’s (@lezethh) all-beige bedroom was in need of a pop of color, and she’d seen a painted ceiling on Pinterest and fallen in love with the idea. “I loved how a painted ceiling can make a space feel even bigger, and it draws your eye up,” she says.

She wanted to make her Pinterest inspo a reality in her own room. Her goals for her bedroom revamp? “I wanted something different for the room, and I wanted to add a rich color.”

For color, Lezeth went withGlidden’s Glowing Firelight, a bold-but-rich orange. A gallon of this set her back about $25. One of hertakeaways from painting her ceiling: “Your neck will hurt. Be prepared for that,” she says.

Aside from maybe getting a neck massage before or after (or both!) your paint project, Lezeth says to make sure to wear protective goggles or glasses to prevent any paint drips from getting in your eye because paint drips are fairly common when painting a ceiling. For the same reason, you’ll want to put down a tarp or plastic cover over your carpet, tile, or hardwood floor, as well as any large furniture you’re unable to move.

To make a big job a little easier, Lezeth used a roller with a long stick attachment. “It really helped because I am afraid of heights and I didn’t always like the step stools,” she says. “I used a paint brush for the edges and used the tape trick, sealed the tape with the current wall color first to block any gaps.” (See the paint trick in action here in a demo ofhow to achieve crisp paint lines every time.)

Lezeth’s hard work was worth it. The “after” is exactly the pop of color the bedroom needed, and it makes her new orange bedding and old artwork pop, too. Add in some fresh nightstands, and this feels like a whole new room. “Somehow the space feels taller but also more cozy,” she says. Not too bad for a $25 project!
