Practical Decorating: Mitigate Messes with Blankets on the Sofa
I’ve noticed a few of my stylish mom friends with young kids have—gasp!—white sofas. However, they’ve mitigated the risk of dirt and stains by putting blankets on the seat and/or back. Not only are blankets ideal for guarding against mess from kids or pets, they allow you to quickly change up the look, hide or camouflage a sofa that is worn or that you don’t like, give off a carefree Bohemian vibe, and are Soul Glo-friendly.

For Your Inspiration Board: Indoor Sliding Doors
Let’s talk doors. I know, not very exciting, unless you’re talking about unique and interesting sliding doors. Adding a sliding door to your space can be a functional space saver or a stylish architectural detail, or both. They really can add an interesting element to your space, and can work in many different spaces, from a modern loft to a traditional country home and everything in between. Personally I’m a big fan of the repurposed vintage door or wood as a sliding door.

The New European Sofa: Go Bold & Unique
If you had been shopping for a sofa at I Saloni in Milan this spring, you’d have to forget about going neutral and safe. Colors were bold, styles were even bolder and just as it sometimes happens in fashion, there was no one look that defined the current direction – it’s much more of a show-your-true-colors, freewheeling embrace of personal style type of moment, which was fun to see… Shown above, a curvy, super long yellow-mustard velvet sofa from Arper.

20 Beautiful Rooms with Beni Ourain Rugs
The first time I ever saw a Beni Ourain rug was in this house tour, here on Apartment Therapy. I saved the picture in Evernote with the caption: NEED THIS RUG. Then suddenly I started seeing Beni Ourain rugs all over the place. I started to wonder if I really liked them, or just thought I did because I saw them everywhere. But then there was that original picture, reminding me that it was love at first sight.

I’ve rounded up some of my favorite pieces for kids’ rooms featuring a plethora of digits as well as some inspirational spaces using numbers as decor. Bold Number Cards are displayed on a shelf in SwissMiss creator Tina Roth Eisenberg’s daughter’s room on Design*Sponge.

Shot in the Dark: Arrow Decor for Kids
I know I’m behind the 8 ball on the Katniss Everdeen trend, but arrows can be so much more than a symbol of the heroine of the Hunger Games. I love these arrow decor ideas, some DIY and some to buy, to incorporate into a child’s room or a nursery. Whether it’s art or 3 dimensional objects, arrows have taken on so many symbolic meanings that you’re bound to find something that speaks to you. 1. Vintage-Inspired Arrow Decor D.I.Y.

A Kitchen Look We Love: Black + Marble
Marble countertops are huge right now, because they are divinely beautiful and will take your breath away. We often see marble (or at least light marbles like Calacatta and Carrara) installed in a nearly or completely all-white kitchen, where it has a certain luxurious radiance. But what about marble in a black kitchen? Now you’ve got something really interesting. In the photo above, from WS Workshop via Inside Living, a luxurious, light marble is the perfect counterpart (pun intended?

A Crash Course in the Swiss Cross Pattern You’re Seeing Everywhere Right Now
One is a statement; twenty is a trend. After seeing this pattern pop up in a thousand different rooms (including the space of NOE Blog‘s Jorid Kvam, above), I had to do some legwork. What is it? And why am I seeing it everywhere? I decided to dive in to Google and give myself a crash course in one of the most popular patterns in design today. Here’s what you need to know: It’s called Swiss Cross, and was probably inspired by the Swiss flag.

For Your Inspiration Board: 15 Ideas for Decorating with Typography
I’m a graphic designer by trade, so of course I love type. But you don’t need to work with it to appreciate how beautiful it can be and want to decorate your space with it. There are about a million different ways you can use type, but it’s important to remember that however you use it it should be intentional, something you chose specifically for that space and not just some random letters.

10 Tell-Tale Signs that Your Home Style Is: Bohemian
Bohemians are a laid-back bunch, with a distinct sense of style. Think your home comes across as a truly bohemian abode? Here are ten signs to tell for sure… 1. Your favorite colors are tie-dye and suzani. 2. You haven’t seen an actual, honest-to-goodness floor since 2010. 3. You own more plants than furniture. 4. Morocco called the other day and they want all their ottomans, lanterns and pillows back. 5. You know that the only thing that works with pattern is another pattern. 6.

Really, It’s Ok to Arrange Books By Color
Books arranged by color have always been a source of contention here on Apartment Therapy. No matter how stunning a home in a House Tour is, the comment section will inevitably explode with mentions (good and bad) of their color-arranged tomes. Full disclosure: one of the centralized book shelves in our home is, in fact, arranged by color. They are not arranged in a rainbow gradient, as seen in this photo, but they are grouped by like colors. We like it.

Bathroom Trend: A Tub Inside The Shower
This past year multiple clients requested something for their bath that I had never heard of before: putting the tub inside of the shower. And by this, they meant they want one glass-enclosed ‘wet room’ for bathing and showering. This configuration has an airy spa-like feel and look, and takes up less space than designing separate tub and showering areas. Often, for smaller spaces, clients have to choose between a tub or a shower.

6 Big Home Trends from the 1990s (That Just Might Return)
Each decade is known for its own home trends. There’s not necessarily a clear-cut start or finish: they overlap with past years, and also come with their own modern twist. We’ve seen a lot of the 80s these past couple of years (neon, Southwestern style), much of which is still with us today. But, if history is our guide, some of the 90s is next. But first, a little history lesson.

10 Stylish Kitchens with Stainless Steel Countertops
An interesting trend creeping into kitchen design lately is home kitchens that look a lot like commercial kitchens. Stainless steel is taking over kitchens. Even if you’re not ready to embrace the full-on restaurant look, you can inject a little bit of that industrial feel into your own space with stainless steel countertops. Stainless steel countertops (as I discovered when putting together this post) are surprisingly versatile.

Timeless vs. Trendy: Decorating with Darts
It’s tough to keep a room feeling fresh and quirky while staying away from things that are a little too trendy. Case in point: my “Keep Calm” poster felt whimsical four years ago, and now I’m itching to replace it. This time, I’m looking to more timeless sources of fun — like the classic pub game of darts. Darts and dartboards have been hanging around bars in the US and UK for centuries, entertaining competitive patrons.

How To Make a Shou Sugi Ban Wall
The reclaimed wood wall has been popular for a while now, and I’ve been wanting to get the look in my garage. I love the earthy hues and honest feel of reclaimed wood, but after realizing the time it would take to scour Craigslist and salvage yards for enough material, I decided to forego that nightmare and instead pursue a DIY approach using a wood-charring method called Shou Sugi Ban.

Birdhouses Add Dimension & Color as Nursery Decor
Some of us have a little birdhouse in our soul and others hang them in the nursery. They’re inexpensive, completely customizable and what could better symbolize the “nesting stage” than a birdhouse? If you really wanted to start from scratch you could build your own birdhouses, but they are also readily available (and inexpensive) at craft stores like Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, etc. Decorate with paint, washi tape, or decoupaged paper or fabric.

On Trend: Neon in Nurseries & Kids Rooms
Neon has been enjoying a design redemption in a big way. These hot colors are hot again, but unlike most design trends, neon hasn’t trickled down into nurseries and kids spaces as much as I’d expected. But for those parents who have chosen to use neon in big or small ways, I say hats off to you!

How To Get the Look: Scandinavian-Style Kids Bedroom
If there is one thing I never tire of while working with children’s design every day, it’s seeing new Scandinavian-style children’s rooms. In an effort to capture a little bit of Sweden stateside, I’ve put together a little “how-to” list to get your fjord on.

Fast-forward ten months, and I’m starting to see gold (and brass) toned hardware and fixtures creeping into kitchens everywhere. Dabney, you trendsetter, you.

Trend Watch: The Campaign Chest

Designed to be easily transported during military operations, campaign furniture included folding seats, small chests, and case furniture that could be dismantled and carried with ease.

Meditating on Pastels
With spring in the air once again we feel inspired/obligated to bring you a post about pastels, that oft-debated color palette. Popping up more and more in the fashion world recently, we bet we’ll be seeing a lot of pastel-toned rooms in the future. And though they might seem calming, these colors pack quite the wallop of controversy. We’ve always personally hated pastels—so soft, so barely-there, so reminiscent of Easter eggs and babies.
